Transportation
Heavy Horse heavy horses are rare and are nearly all bred from a small number of war horses brought over by the original settlers. They are invariably trained for war and become the mounts of senior knights.
Light Horse Not even light horses are common, although there are many more than there are heavy horses. The best are trained as war horses for less important chivalrics, while the rest (many with a fair chunk of pony in) become riding horses for their non combatant family.
Pony The pony is fairly common, it can be found wild in some the less developed areas but has been bred in captivity and trained for years. Some are used for riding, particularly by the smaller races, but most are used to pull carts or carry goods in panniers. A pony trap is a cheap method of transport for anyone with a bit of money.
Mule Mules are less common, and many of those are a cross between a donkey and a pony. However, a few mules can be found hauling carts or wagons or carrying goods on pack saddles or panniers in most areas. In the most inhospitable places, mules are often the animal of choice, due to their physical resilience.
Donkey Donkeys are uncommon and are mainly used for breeding mules, although a small number are used as pack animals with either a pack saddle or panniers. Female donkeys often are allowed to breed one or two donkey colts and are then used to breed mules. The very best males are kept at stud while the others are used as pack animals.
Oxen The main dray animal in the region, just about all the heavy loads are hauled on ox wagons.
Farm Animals
Chickens The most abundant farm ‘critter’ in the region - just about every farm, and many small holders, keep a flock of hens for their eggs and, eventually, their meat.
Goats The favourite ‘small holding’ animal - gives a little milk, a little wool and eventually a little meat. Sometimes used on Sheep farms to help control the sheep.
Sheep Abundant in the hillier areas, but most stock farms will keep a few, sheep are kept for their meat and wool.
Pigs Abundant in wooded areas but most stock farms will keep a few, pigs are kept for their meat.
Cows Not abundant, but most farms have one or two cows to give milk and dairy products. However, dairy products are expensive.
Oxen The main power source on any farm, the Ox is used to plough the fields and pull the wagons.
Other animals
Dogs Small dogs are trained either as sheep dogs or hunting dogs, while most larger dogs are trained as guard or war dogs. Few are kept as pets.
Birds Falconry is a sport of the chivalrics and many a knight and his retinue have ridden out with a hawk or two. However, this is an expensive hobby, so only the wealthiest will be able to indulge.
